Australian architect Nicholas Aegis has transformed his one-bedroom, 24-square-metre flat in Melbourne’s historic Cairo Flats into a highly adaptable micro apartment centred around a multifunctional kitchen “toolbox”.
Located in Fitzroy, the Cairo Flats were originally completed in 1936 and represent an early Australian interpretation of Charles Le Corbusier’s modernist concept of the home as a “machine for living”. Drawing from this philosophy, Aegis reimagined his apartment as a series of flexible suites designed for efficiency and spatial adaptability.

Rather than removing the original layout, Aegis retained the existing walls to preserve the character of the heritage-listed building. The new interventions; minimal yet transformative, enable the compact home to shift between configurations without compromising its architectural integrity.
At the centre of the plan is the hybrid kitchen “toolbox”, a fold-out structure that combines storage, cooking, and spatial division in one unit. The piece integrates sliding and folding doors that allow the space to open up for entertaining or close off for privacy, depending on use.

The sliding panel conceals a pantry, while the folding door includes shelving and a metal knife rack, allowing easy access to everyday cooking items. This modular functionality reflects Aegis’s emphasis on utility and adaptability within small living environments.
Clad in its original cream brick façade, the apartment maintains its historic identity and blends seamlessly with the Cairo Flats complex. Inside, the open layout and restrained material palette create a calm, functional atmosphere that prioritises light and movement.
Positioned to face north, the apartment receives generous natural light throughout the day, minimising the need for artificial illumination. In the evenings, concealed LED strips within the joinery emit a warm golden glow, echoing the natural warmth of daylight.
According to Aegis, the apartment continues to meet the needs of both him and his wife, who have no plans for further renovations.
