‘Clinic of the Future’ engages and excites from its technology and design

Futuristic, personalized, and human-centric features are not typically associated with hospitals. However, as medical technology advances, there is a growing need for healthcare facilities to keep pace with this evolution. In response to this demand, Cactus, a design studio based in Brooklyn, has partnered with the Mount Sinai Institute to introduce Lab100. This innovative project is a hybrid medical clinic and research lab situated in the heart of the city. Lab100 consists of eight station-like clinical laboratories and aims to revolutionize comprehensive healthcare by blending cutting-edge digital design, architecture, and technology.

At Lab100, technological advancements are evident in various features, such as a custom-designed app that gathers a patient’s preliminary health history. This data is then integrated into a larger dataset, which is subsequently reviewed by a doctor on a large multimedia panel. To manage the vast amount of information, Cactus has developed an engaging and organized display system. Additionally, digital testing areas assess the body’s performance in different tasks and provide real-time results. The interior design of this facility is a departure from traditional healthcare spaces, incorporating virtual reality environments, touch screens, gamified tests, live video comparisons, and body/gesture tracking to create an immersive experience during check-ups.

The interior design of Lab100 reflects Cactus’ core philosophy of merging physical architecture with digital technology. The space is characterized by its clean, colorful, and spacious layout. Equipment such as touchscreens seamlessly integrate into the walls and use LED coloring when not in use, contributing to a playful wall design. Instead of conventional curtains, patterned wire dividers separate spaces and offer privacy. The flooring features concrete slabs with specks of various stone finishes, creating a visually stimulating focal point for visitors. These design elements collectively imbue the project with an ultra-modern aesthetic that prioritizes comfort. While the predominantly white color scheme of the ceilings and walls may seem purely aesthetic, the vibrant colors of the touchscreens and video displays serve a dual purpose, adding to both the visual appeal and the technological integration of the space.

Lab100 exemplifies the notion that the future of healthcare lies in its design. Historically, healthcare environments lacked sophisticated interior design elements, but initiatives like Lab100 demonstrate that the future of healthcare is not solely about automation.
