Tiny House

Elevated treehouse retreat in Brazil’s Serra da Mantiqueira

Altar Ninho – Natureza Urbana, Brazil

Raised high among the treetops of the magnificent Brazilian mountain range, Serra da Mantiquera, and overlooking the waters of the Joanópolis Reservoir, Altar Ninho is an elevated tiny cabin that offers a quiet refuge immersed in nature. Built by architectural firm Natureza Urbana, Altar Ninho represents their latest collaboration with Altar, a hospitality company that prioritizes the creation of decentralized, sustainable hotels in incredible natural places across Brazil.

The setting of Altar Ninho certainly fits this description and provides a perfect space for a unique retreat and decompression experience. Located outside of the city of São Paulo, Serra da Mantiquera is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna native to Brazil, along with springs, waterfalls and streams that will attract visitors to this place of natural beauty. Altar Ninho provides an ideal place to stay and admire the beauty of Serra da Mantiquera. Elevated up to four metres (thirteen feet) above the ground, Altar Ninho combines the aesthetics and atmosphere of a treehouse with the comforts of a modern glamping experience.

Inside the treehouse, two generous and comfortable bunk beds are situated next to a scenic window, which provides unobstructed, sprawling views of the pristine waters of the Joanopolis Reservoir. These are accompanied by a pair of living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, including a simple modern kitchen and living area inside and a spacious natural wood deck out the front, for quiet contemplation amid the striking natural landscapes. A bathroom and shower are also included, with a skylight that opens up towards the soaring trees of Serra da Mantiquera. Visitors also have access to an exclusive outdoor leisure area, with sofa, outdoor table, barbecue and campfire space, allowing them to enjoy all the simple pleasures of an outdoor getaway.

In the design of Altar Ninho, Natureza Urbana has prioritized environmentally responsible practices. The architects say they view the space as “part of a living and complex system, recognizing its vocations and potentials, and promoting solutions to minimize the impact of human actions”.

To reduce Altar Ninho’s environmental impact on Serra da Mantiquera, key components of the house, such as the metal framework, façade, and enclosures, were prefabricated offsite, transported, and swiftly assembled on location. Furthermore, the treehouse is elevated on metal pillars, ensuring minimal disturbance to the ground.

Located in an incredible place of natural beauty, Altar Ninho offers a peaceful, contemplative space where visitors can come to rest and regenerate amid the beauty of Brazil’s Serra da Mantiquera mountain range.
