Innovative modular living where functionality meets style

Space of Mind - Studio Puisto, Helsinki, Finland

The Space of Mind cabin, designed by Helsinki based Studio Puisto in collaboration with Made By Choice, is a compact and versatile prefabricated modular unit that serves multiple functions. This innovative design is a response to the changing circumstances brought about by the recent pandemic, redefining the concept of a ‘home away from home’ for those spending more time indoors.

One of the key features of the Space of Mind cabin is its construction primarily from wood, making it lightweight and easily transportable. This allows for efficient prefabrication in a factory setting and easy delivery to remote locations, minimizing site disruption during installation. The use of locally sourced timber also adds a natural and warm aesthetic to the cabin, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Externally, the cabin features an angular shape, breaking away from traditional rectangular structures. Additionally, the cabin includes an overhang that provides shelter from the rain, allowing users to enjoy the surrounding nature even during unpleasant weather.

Inside, the modular system of the Space of Mind cabin allows users to customize the space to suit their needs. The design incorporates a slot-and-lock system of wooden pegs, which can be used to attach furniture or accessories such as side tables or hanging options. This flexibility enables users to easily reconfigure the space as required, whether it be for work, relaxation, or entertainment.

The cabin offers various options for cladding and support, including larch timber, black tar paper, or galvanized steel with standing seams. This variety allows users to choose the style and aesthetic that best suits their preferences. Additionally, the foundation of the cabin can be adapted to different climates and terrains, using removable helical piers or concrete. This ensures that the cabin remains stable and secure regardless of the location.

To enhance the functionality and appeal of the Space of Mind cabin, additional features can be added. These include options such as wool carpets, composting toilet, outdoor kitchen, or storage elements. These add-ons further extend the potential uses of the cabin, making it suitable for a wide range of purposes and activities.

One of the unique aspects of the Space of Mind cabin is its potential for micro-hospitality models. These cabins can serve as off-grid accommodations that can be booked and managed via an app, with keyless access. This opens up opportunities for individuals or businesses to create small-scale hospitality experiences in natural settings. During low seasons or when the demand for accommodations is low, the cabins can be relocated or repurposed for other uses, providing a flexible and adaptable solution.

The versatility of the Space of Mind cabin is what sets it apart from traditional structures and makes it particularly appealing in the current context. The cabin offers a dedicated space that can serve as a home office, a backyard yoga studio, or even a micro-hotel room in a natural setting. By providing an opportunity to disconnect from the distractions of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world, the cabin offers a unique and refreshing experience. With its lightweight construction and easy transportability, it offers a practical and sustainable solution for those seeking a flexible and inspiring living space.
