Innovative pavilion showcases Luxembourg’s past, present, and future

Journey of The Senses- Dubai

Metaform Architects’ Luxembourg Pavilion pays homage to the unique and distinctive characteristics of Luxembourg. The design of the pavilion, with its open interior, sophisticated use of color, and innovative structure, embodies the core values of the country. The firm aimed to capture Luxembourg’s past, present, and future, while also showcasing its values: small yet ambitious, intriguing yet reassuring, and, above all, generous and open.

The three-story building greets visitors with a grey concrete ramp that serves as a continuous path guiding them through the space. The ribbon-like design of the exterior seamlessly transitions into the interior as guests ascend from the ground to the first and second floors. The pavilion was constructed using 70% recycled or reused materials, thanks to the steel framework. The white walls of the building create a sense of openness and accessibility.

The exterior structure of the pavilion takes the form of a Möbius strip, a one-sided surface symbolizing infinity and the convergence of Luxembourg’s past, present, and future for all to celebrate.

The journey from the bottom to the top is a continuous yet ever-evolving experience. Moving between the inner and outer protective layers creates a sensation of being simultaneously inside and outside. Various visual connections on different levels and stages evoke shifting ambiences and moods, sparking curiosity about the country.

The ground floor features storage space, restrooms, a restaurant with an open kitchen, and a gift shop. The first floor, accessible from the main concrete ramp, is a versatile area suitable for hosting large events like concerts, receptions, and conferences.

On the second floor, a space-themed exhibition showcases projections and animations highlighting Luxembourg’s finest qualities. Visitors can descend back to the ground floor via a metal slide, adding a playful and looping element reminiscent of Luxembourg’s unique and winding landscape.

The Luxembourg Pavilion offers both tourists and locals an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture, architecture, and landscape of Luxembourg, serving as a reminder that architectural design can be both playful and ambitious while showing restraint.
