When residential and landscape architecture unite, they can harmoniously integrate with the environment. HW STUDIO, a Mexico-based architectural firm, has crafted a concrete family home nestled in the ground of Morelia, Mexico. Known as “The Hill in Front of the Glen,” this contemporary Hobbit-style dwelling seamlessly merges residential and landscape architecture, demonstrating the potential for sustainable living in harmony with nature.
The clients specifically requested the use of stone, wood, concrete, and steel in the construction, reflecting the natural elements and colors of the Mexican mountainside. The studio emphasized the importance of maintaining the rugged and primitive mountain atmosphere, a key desire of the clients.

The marble-colored concrete walls exude a gentle and reassuring ambiance, providing a sense of security from the outside world. The warm burnt-chestnut hue of the wooden floors adds a sensory dimension, offering a contrast to the coolness of the concrete and creating a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, the steel casing around the windows enhances protection from the elements.
Concrete was chosen as the primary material due to its symbolic connection to nature, as envisioned by the studio. The wooden flooring evokes the scent of pine trees, balancing the coolness of the concrete, while the steel, weathered over time, resembles tree bark, further blending the structure with its surroundings.

A raised concrete path, flanked by lush greenery, leads to the house, symbolizing a journey home and encouraging mindfulness as one traverses the path. The narrow width of the path promotes a sense of presence and allows inhabitants to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and serenity of the mountainside.
Upon entering through a sturdy steel door, visitors are greeted by a well-organized interior layout. The communal areas, including the kitchen, dining, and living spaces, offer panoramic views of the wooden landscape through expansive windows. In contrast, the bedrooms on the other side provide tranquil vistas of the sky and treetops, creating a serene retreat.

The design cleverly conceals media and appliances, maintaining a harmonious blend of technology and nature. The lighting scheme complements the abundant natural light, ensuring a seamless integration with the surroundings.
“The Hill in Front of the Glen” project draws inspiration from attentive observation of the environment and the clients’ desire for security and comfort. The house boasts a thermal envelope, ensuring sustainability and energy efficiency while seamlessly blending into the Morelia landscape.
The architectural choices, color palette, and spatial layout pay homage to the environment, embodying a philosophy of respect rather than dominance. The house discreetly coexists with its surroundings, embodying a harmonious relationship with nature.
