Häuslein Tiny House Co, known for utilizing premium Australian materials to build homes that last over generations, has released a new version of its teeniest tiny home, dubbed the Modern Gunyah. Residing with a minimal length of just 5 meters, this tiny house surprisingly creates space for all of life’s necessities.
Built at their headquarters in Herons Creek, New South Wales, Häuslein’s Gunyah draws inspiration from its name, which in the local Aboriginal language, denotes a bush hut or temporary shelter. Accordingly, the Gunyah is designed for short term stays; for towing around on a holiday escape; or placement in the backyard to host family and friends. The home is built onto a 5-meter-long and 2.5-meter-wide trailer and comes with its own Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number; making it fully transportable on the road. This flexibility is striking, as at just 2.85 to 3 tonnes, it can be towed by most four-wheel drives.

The Gunyah is crafted with timber features and long-lasting industrial materials, and like all Häuslein tiny homes, each project is built to order in their on-site workshop.
“I’ve always had a bit of a dream to build a house in a workshop”, Scott Rohdich, one of Häuslein’s four founders tells Micromansional. “Because, you know, you can really focus on efficiency and quality.”
The tiny dwelling is clad with two dark, contrasting materials: made up from locally sourced timber, and dark gray metal sheeting. The Gunyah’s exterior conveys simplicity and architectural elegance through the sharpness of the basalt matte TRIMDEK metal and vibrancy of the marine varnished Lunawood. The contrast brings out the grain of the timber, and is most prominent at each end of the home, featuring the largest sections of the Lunawood.
Inside, the Modern Gunyah delivers on its name, with a contemporary minimalist interior of muted colors and refined timber selection. Those stepping into the tiny home are met with a surprising sense of space, with built-ins lining the perimeter.
“One of the things I like to incorporate into any design, any build, is to have just a bit of space, you know, where you can actually do a twirl, or, whatever you want,” says Rohdich.

The tiny home boasts a cozy living area; large modern kitchen, with stunning timber carpentry and black tile backsplash; and a compact bathroom that is hidden behind the kitchen. The bathroom hosts a full-sized 900mm by 900mm shower, toilet and basin. A timber ladder located at the opposite end of the kitchen provides access to the elevated loft area. The loft is home to a queen bed with margin on all sides. On warm days, the breakfast bar’s custom awning window can be opened, letting the outside in.
Häuslein’s use of birch plywood and engineered timber floorboards contrast with the charcoal cabinetry, backsplash and bathroom door. The black fittings and recesses of the expressed joints tie in with these dark elements which define the kitchen space.
Perhaps the most striking addition to the Gunyah, however, is the strip light which lines the peak of the gable roof. While fulfilling its primary function of brightening the space, the light accentuates the high ceilings. The expressed joints also draw the eyes upward and both design elements make the space feel larger than its compact 14-square-meter footprint.
A ductless mini-split is an add on for this tiny home, yet several features help moderate extreme temperatures. The walls, ceiling, and floor are insulated with fibreglass earth wool, while silver sarking reflects heat and acts as a moisture barrier. Window placement has also been considered to allow for cross ventilation when conditions permit.
