The metamorphosis of a Luxembourg warehouse into a light-filled workspace

Metaform Architects - Luxembourg

The office space of a once cold and neglected exhibition hall in Luxembourg has been transformed into a light-filled environment, now serving as the workplace for DSL, an IT solutions company. Designed by Metaform architects, the primary objective for the client was to infuse the warehouse with natural light while retaining some of its original characteristics, such as skylights and a central staircase that serves as a focal point in the workspace.

Shahram Agaajani, the founder of Metaform architects, highlights that the main focus of the project was to maximize natural daylight. The aim was to create an efficient, pristine, and luminous office area that places people and communication at the forefront.

The renovated building boasts crisp white walls, light oak flooring, and grey steel beams that enhance the openness of the space, allowing natural light to dominate and establish a sun-soaked atmosphere that offers a reprieve from the technology-driven nature of the work.

Within the building, there are amenities such as a staff kitchen, meeting rooms, open-plan offices, an exhibition area, and an outdoor terrace. Upon entering the 1,950-square-meter building, both employees and clients are welcomed by the double-height reception zone. The room is bathed in sunlight streaming through large bay windows and refurbished skylights. This strategic use of natural light not only promotes a seamless environment but also reduces the reliance on artificial lighting, resulting in energy savings.

The central oak staircase stands out as a centerpiece, beckoning clients and employees to the communal space. Serving as a semi-shared and private area, it offers a place for individuals to gather, orient themselves, or take a respite from their workstations.

Given that the IT industry is often associated with high stress and fast-paced environments, the incorporation of abundant greenery throughout the office aids in air filtration and cultivates a serene atmosphere for the employees. This botanical touch contributes to an ideal work setting that fosters productivity and a sense of openness.

The firm emphasizes that by integrating natural light, the architects aimed to cultivate a positive and inviting workspace.
