Nestled outside Buenos Aires, the Shire is a unique rural home designed by Atelier Matias Mosquera. This remarkable structure seamlessly blends into the lush green landscape, drawing inspiration from the picturesque hobbit homes found in Tolkien’s fantasy world. Built as a retreat from the confines of city living, the Shire emphasizes a profound connection to nature.
The design of this captivating residence revolves around a series of interconnected geometric circles, creating multiple spaces that foster a connection with the outdoors. A circular courtyard at the front serves as the heart of the living space, providing a tranquil area to sit among trees and flowerbeds. From this courtyard, a gently curving garden path leads to the top of the structure, allowing inhabitants to appreciate their surroundings from new angles.
The grounds also feature an elegant, curved lap pool, a charming garden shed, and vegetable patches. These meticulously landscaped areas are adorned with local flowers, bushes, trees, and shrubbery, enabling the building to merge naturally with its environment. This thoughtful landscaping not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides additional insulation for the home. The architects emphasize that, unlike other homes that deteriorate over time, the Shire progressively integrates with nature.
The interior of the Shire continues this circular motif. The walls are constructed from exposed concrete, imparting a rustic, stripped-down aesthetic that is consistent throughout the entire home. The space includes three bedrooms, a kitchen, a library/living area, and a bathroom featuring a concrete bathtub. While the concrete design may not appeal to everyone, the numerous floor-to-ceiling windows allow ample natural light to flood the space, preventing it from feeling cold or dark.
In line with the architect’s vision of connecting with nature, the Shire is designed to be off-grid and fully self-sufficient. Solar panels provide electricity, linked to a battery system for efficient energy use. Water tanks capture rainwater, while the vegetable garden supports self-sufficient food production, with all waste being recycled. These eco-friendly features enable the inhabitants of the Shire to live in harmony with nature, emphasizing the importance of the natural world in their daily lives. The architects assert that when architecture merges with its surroundings, it creates numerous advantages. Beyond the evident ecological and functional benefits, nature takes the “leading role” instead of the building itself.
